Overview
Since severe sepsis is a major
cause of morbidity and mortality throughout the world and
is a continual challenge to critical care practitioners, a
great deal of research has been devoted to the elucidation
of the biological mechanisms underlying this condition. Over
the past decade, many molecular findings have increased our
understanding of the pathophysiology at each of the stages
of sepsis (sepsis, severe sepsis and septic shock). Each level
of sepsis brings with it increased severity, organ damage,
and supportive therapy requirements. Therefore recognizing,
diagnosing,+ and treating sepsis earlier in the disease process
is necessary to successfully reduce patient mortality.
In this interactive course, we will highlight
the current definitions and stages of sepsis. Additionally,
this course will provide the learner with a comprehensive
overview of disease pathophysiology, symptomatology, and epidemiology
in order to facilitate prompt diagnosis and treatment.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course,
you will be able to:
-
Understand the defining criteria and clinical
features of sepsis and related conditions
-

severe sepsis and septic shock
- Develop a structure approach to management
of the patient with severe sepsis
