Case In Review:
Achieving Effective Outcomes in the Management of Severe Sepsis

By John P. Kress, MD, FCCP

Put your knowledge of sepsis and its management to the test in this interactive case study.

Overview

Sepsis is an increasing health problem, accounting for considerable morbidity and high mortality. Because of the crude mortality from all stages of sepsis, it is imperative that clinicians effectively diagnose and treat their patients with symptoms of sepsis.

In the following interactive Case in Review, you will meet a patient with severe sepsis. You will be guided through each step of the patient's management plan. After each presentation of the patient's medical history, you will be asked a set of questions regarding the treatment plan. To assist you in answering these questions, you will be able to visit the medical library to consult resources and clinical practice guidelines to help decide the best treatment plan. After completing each question, you will be able to listen to a specialist familiar with the case explain the justification for the answer.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Understand the pathophysiology of sepsis and how this affects the management of sepsis

  • Define the diagnostic criteria for sepsis and its variants

  • Describe current therapeutic interventions in critically ill patients with sepsis
