In 2007, the American College of Chest Physicians released an update to the treatment guidelines for Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH), based on recent clinical developments. This latest update provides evidence-based treatment recommendations for physicians involved in the care of patients with PAH. The symptoms of PAH are nonspecific and many patients are labeled by healthcare providers with an incorrect diagnosis for several years before PAH is correctly diagnosed. Symptoms are generally due to impaired oxygen transport and decreased cardiac output. Dyspnea is present in most PAH patients at the time of presentation. Exercise intolerance is a frequent complaint and has an insidious onset in most patients. The importance of a thorough diagnostic evaluation to distinguish PAH from venous, hypoxic, thromboembolic, or miscellaneous varieties of pulmonary hypertension is paramount to establishing a plan of care. This program will assist you in accurate diagnosis of PAH and in treating your patients using the most recent clinical guidelines.
