Overview
Blood is becoming a precious resource for critically
ill patients. Blood shortages are no longer a uncommon phenomenon
in hospitals across the country. Recent data suggest that traditional
transfusion processes lead to over utilization of this valuable
resource. Therefore, it is imperative that critical care physicians
be familiar with alternative methods for treating anemia. This interactive
discussion will focus on the current trends in transfusion practices
and alternatives for the treatment of anemia.
