Topic A

New Strategies in the Management of Patients with Severe Sepsis
By Richard I. Hall, MD, FCCP, FRCP

Topic B

Case in Review: Evidence-Based Approach to Managing Severe Sepsis
By John P. Kress, MD, FCCP

Overview

Topic A
Severe sepsis is the number one cause of death in the noncoronary intensive care unit and the eleventh leading cause of death overall in the United States. The increased understanding of sepsis pathogenesis is a positive step towards clinical management. As a result of our current understanding and newer treatment options that are available for this devastating response to infection, there is a need to re-evaluate sepsis diagnosis, management guidelines, and therapeutic regimens in order to provide our patients with the best critical care medicine available.

Topic B
In the following course, you will read about a patient with severe sepsis. Once you have reviewed this information, you will be asked to determine the most appropriate treatment plan. To assist you in this task, please read the article, “Strategies in the Management of Patients with Severe Sepsis” located in this issue of CME-TODAY™ for Cardiopulmonary and Critical Care. You can also refer to Courses AB0122 and AB0126 located on the companion CMEonCD.™
